"I've heard people talk about the Soviet communist party financing the PCI and on occasions I signed" to authorize the payments, former Soviet president Gorbachev told reporters.
"But on the other side $10 billion was spent to prevent the PCI taking power democratically," he added.
The issue of whether the Soviet Union funded the PCI has long been controversial in Italy.
