n LONDON -- South Africa's competent late-order batsmen frustrated England and scored freely Friday on the second morning of the first Test at Lord's to take the score to 350 for nine at lunch.
Resuming at 244 for six, David Richardson, Brian McMillan and especially Craig Matthews played their strokes putting on 93 for the seventh and eight wicket as 106 runs were scored in the session. McMillan was out five minutes before lunch for 29, leaving Fanie de Villiers on seven not out and Alan Donald yet to score as they went into the break.
Without the hype and pageantry of Thursday's historic occasion when a packed house, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu and South Africa's Deputy President Thabo Mbeki, saw South Africa return to Lord's for the first time since 1965, the players got on with their job with few nerves.
