Second Space Dock Try Fails

A supply ship carrying fresh food and American research equipment failed on its second attempt to dock with Russia's orbiting space station Mir on Tuesday. Russian television said a third attempt might be made.

Space officials had said earlier that the Progress supply ferry had only enough fuel for one more attempt and would eventually burn up in the atmosphere if it failed.

Such a failure would force the troubled Russian space program to seek funding for another ship, and would make the three cosmonauts aboard the Mir stretch their dwindling supplies even further.
