Sciandri Takes Stage

STRADELLA, Italy -- Maximilian Sciandri's last minute sprint won him the 16th leg of the Giro d'Italia, while Yevgeny Berzin remained overall leader for the 12th consecutive stage. In the last 100 meters of Monday's race, Sciandri edged fellow Italian Fabiano Fontanelli. Both cyclists completed the relatively-flat 220-kilometer stretch from Sondrio to Stradella in six hours, 24 minutes and 36 seconds. Crossing the finish line one second after Sciandri and Fontanelli was Enrico Zaina, also from Italy. Zaina's time was matched by 43 other cyclists, including Italian Marco Pantani, and Russian Berzin, who has been the overall leader for most of the tour.
