PIETERMARITZBURG, South Africa -- U.S. marathon runner Alberto Salazar, a former world marathon record holder, won the 1994 Comrades Marathon over 86.7 kilometers Tuesday in an unofficial time of five hours, 38 minutes and 38 seconds. According to unofficial results, second place went to South African Nic Bester with a time of 5:42.51 and third went to his compatriot Mahlala Mohloli at 5:43.14. The women's winner was Valentina Liakova of Russia, with an unofficial 6:41.22, more than four minutes ahead of compatriot Valentina Shatyaeva.
