Russia's Media Watchdog Warns Magazine After Report on Putin's Daughter

V.Baranov / Vedomosti

Russia's media watchdog, Roskomnadzor, issued a warning to The New Times magazine after it published an investigation into Vladimir Putin's eldest daughter, the RBC media portal reported Monday.

The warning was issued in connection with the magazine's Jan. 18 publication, which did not specify that the Ukrainian right-wing Right Sector nationalist group is banned in Russia, The New Times editor-in-chief Yevgenia Albats told RBC.

Earlier on Monday the magazine published an investigation into President Vladimir Putin's elder daughter. After the investigation was published, The New Times website was targeted, according to Albats.

The New Times is known for a critical approach toward the Russian authorities and is widely believed to support Russia's political opposition.

The warning from Roskomnadzor was the first the publication received in nine years, Albats said.

According to Russian law, an outlet's license can be revoked if it receives two warnings in 12 months.

Yevgeniya Albats declined to comment on the matter when contacted by The Moscow Times.
