Pirates Injure Russian Sailor

A Russian crew member of the NS Spirit oil tanker was wounded late Sunday in an attack by pirates off the coast of Nigeria, the vessel’s owner, the shipping company Novoship, said in a statement.

The ship’s captain reported that about 10 armed men boarded the vessel 55 kilometers from the port of Lagos and opened fire, the company said. The crew took refuge, and the pirates left the ship, its said.

Russia’s ambassador to Nigeria, Alexander Polyakov, said the pirates carried away an unspecified sum of money and other valuables, Interfax reported.

The company said the wounded crew member was being evacuated for treatment.
