nuclear export halted

HELSINKI () -- Following protests by activists and Russian residents, Finland's parliament voted unanimously Wednesday to stop exporting nuclear waste to Russia.

Starting in 1997, Finland will end the practice, which dates from the Soviet era, of paying a reprocessing plant in Russia's Chelyabinsk region to take shipments of spent fuel.

The shipments were questioned for ethical and environmental reasons, and because of uncertainty about what the Russian plant Mayak was doing with the material.
