Mine Closure Imminent

MOSCOW () -- The Russian government has agreed to close a coal mine in the far north, an official at Rosugol, Russia's main coal producer, said Monday.


"The coal produced at the Khalmer-Yu mine is too expensive for our company and we believe Russia can do without it," the official said by telephone.


The mine, about 65 kilometers north of Vorkuta, has an annual capacity of 400,000 tons and employs 1,20
