Lutskevich Freed After Years in Prison for Anti-Putin Protest

Denis Lutskevich has been released from prison after serving years behind bars for participating in the anti-Kremlin protests on Bolotnaya Ploshchad in 2012, state-run RIA Novosti reported Tuesday.

Lutskevich was released from a prison in the Tula region after serving out his 3.5-year sentence, the report said, citing a spokesperson for the regional federal penitentiary service.

Hundreds of protesters were detained at the so-called Bolotnoye protests in May 2012 to protest the re-election of President Vladimir Putin.

The European Court of Human Rights in September ruled Russia should pay damages of up to 3,000 euros for violating the rights of three activists — Leonid Kovyazin, Artyom Savyolov and Ilya Gushchin.

The ruling did not stop a Moscow court from ordering the detention of Dmitry Buchenkov earlier this month for his role in the protest and using violence against police officers.
