Low Gate for Games

HIROSHIMA, Japan (Reuters, ) -- Attendance so far at the first Asian Games held outside a capital city is a record low, figures released by the organizers on Friday showed.


Despite a record number of 34 sports and 337 events, a total of only 114,159 people have attended, nearly half of them on just one day. More than one million people had been forecast to attend the Games, which end Oct. 16.


In events Friday, multitalented swimmer Lu Bin broke a world record as China's Asian Games gold medal juggernaut stretched from the pool to the softball field. India won its first gold of the competition in the men's team tennis final. Uzbekistan edged Thailand 5-4 in soccer to maintain its perfect record.
