MOSCOW () -- A senior Armenian official said Tuesday that his country and Azerbaijan could sign a peace treaty this month ending their bloody dispute over the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Armenian parliament speaker Babken Ararktsyan told Itar-Tass that heads of the two states could sign the draft of a "comprehensive political treaty" August 30, bringing the war to a close.
The intractable conflict has consistently defied peace efforts by Russia, Turkey and the international community. Imminent peace deals have been announced several times, without concrete result.
Several thousand people have been killed in six and a half years of fighting over Karabakh, a mainly Armenian-populated territory allotted to Azerbaijan by the Kremlin in 1923.
