Italy, U.S. Spikers Win

ATHENS, Greece () -- A strong United States team defeated South Korea on Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the 13th Volleyball Men's World Championship.


The Americans kept their perfect record intact to take down the Koreans in three sets 15-2, 15-4, 16-14 in the first quarterfinal match of the day. They earned a game against Greece or the Netherlands, playing later Thursday.


Defending champion Italy beat Russia 3-1 (15-4, 16-17, 15-3, 15-5) to become the second team to advance to the semifinals. In the other quarterfinal, top ranked Brazil was to take on Cuba.
