IBM Simplifies Lines

SOMERS, New York () -- International Business Machines Corp., moving to reduce consumers' confusion about its products, says it is consolidating its personal computer lines and will centralize its worldwide PC operations.

IBM said it will reduce the number of product lines to four from nine. The new brand names are IBM PC, for business computers; IBM PC Server, for machines connected on local area networks; ThinkPad, for portable computers; and Aptiva, for personal computers targeted at home and family users.

Explaining its new strategy, IBM said, "We have lost touch with the majority of customers, who are all dazed and confused by the complexity in the technology, the array of choices, and the level of support."
