VIRGINIA WATER, England () -- Ernie Els, who capped a world-record season by winning the World Championship on Sunday, was named the 1994 Golfer of the Year on Wednesday by the PGA European Tour.
The 25-year-old South African won five tournaments this year, including his first major title at the U.S. Open at Oakmont, Pennsylvania, in July. It was the first time the event had been won by a European Tour member.
Els' six stroke victory at the World Championship last weekend in Jamaica boosted his 1994 earnings to $2.9 million, a world record for a calendar year.
Els also won the Dubai Desert Classic, the World Match Play Championship and the Gene Sarazen World Open.
