Clinton Backs Talks

President Bill Clinton on Tuesday affirmed U.S. support for joint British-Irish efforts to end the violence in Northern Ireland.

Clinton and British Prime Minister John Major met privately at the White House for talks aimed, in part, at ending tensions between the two countries over the controversial U.S. decision to allow Gerry Adams, the leader of Sinn Fein, to enter the United States.

"With regard to Northern Ireland, I want to reaffirm the support of the United States for the joint declaration, for the process it envisions, and for an end to the violence," Clinton told reporters.
