Ciller Gets Boost

Turkish municipal election results gave Prime Minister Tansu Ciller an unexpected boost on Monday, ensuring the survival of her coalition government.

Ciller, 47, Turkey's first woman prime minister, had come under fire for her handling of a worsening economic crisis.

Defying opinion polls, her True Path Party outscored its rivals in Sunday's elections, taking a comfortable lead over the main opposition Motherland Party led by Mesut Yilmaz.

Bankers said government-imposed public sector price restraint meantordinary people had not yet felt the impact of this year's economic deterioration.
