Berlusconi Warning

ROME () --Dogged by a plunging lira and weak Italian markets, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Monday tried to win over his critics with worry, predicting that unrest and economic disorder would take over if he was forced to resign.

In a television interview on RAI state television, Berlusconi reiterated his view, laid out late Sunday night at a news conference, that disorder would follow if political squabbling forced him to resign sparking a new election campaign only a few months after the March voting that led to the formation of his conservative coalition in May.

The move follows a weekend reconciliation between Berlusconi and Northern League leader Umberto Bossi -- his most troublesome coalition partner.
