WASHINGTON () -- President Bill Clinton has accepted the resignation of Deputy Treasury Secretary Roger Altman, an old friend who critics said sacrificed his credibility while testifying on the Whitewater affair.


Altman was not implicated personally in the Whitewater affair, a web of property and banking investments involving the president and his wife in their home state of Arkansas.


But Altman developed a severe credibility problem with Capitol Hill over his failure to give a full accounting of the Treasury Department's contacts with the White House about a government probe into Whitewater-related matters.
