It was a busy night at the Multimedia Art Museum on Wednesday when crowds of Russians — some in practical sneakers and others in cocktail attire — waited in a long-winding line for the coat check before heading to the opening of the eighth annual Moscow International Biennale "Fashion and Style in Photography."
There are 44 exhibits planned for display from February to May, including 21 exhibits by foreign photographers. The main theme of the exhibits is "beauty, myths and sources of inspiration" though the artists don't necessarily agree on what this beauty is.
Some of the notable exhibits on display now include works from Christian Bouqueret's collection, "Voici Paris. Photographic Modernities, 1920-1950." The exhibit, on at the Multimedia Art Museum, shows 250 photographs shot by leading photographers between the two World Wars.
August Sander has been described as one of Germany's most influential portrait photographers of the early 20th century. Now 150 of his photographs are featured in the "Portrait. Landscape. Architecture" exhibit in Moscow. The exhibit includes photos of notable people from the 20th century as well as architectural shots made in Germany.
Another exhibit already on display is that by 1990s generation photographer Mikhail Rozanov. A devotee of Russian constructivist traditions, Rozanov's shoots minimalistic, black-and-white photographs. The exhibit includes select works from his collections on buildings, industrial sites, flowers, deserts and Antarctica, among others.
The Moscow International Biennale is on until May 26 at various locations, including the Multimedia Art Museum, Manezh, Novy Manezh, House of Photography, Tsereteli Art Gallery, Cervantes Institute, Cultural Foundation Ekaterina and the Moscow Museum of Contemporary Art.
