The so-called Khlebny Dom, or Bread House, of Tsaritsyno palace in southern Moscow was opened last weekend after a controversial restoration. Work began on the neo-Gothic palace in 1775, but the structure fell into disrepair after Catherine the Great decided she didn't like it anymore. Last year, Mayor Yury Luzhkov initiated a plan to turn the picturesque ruins into a working museum and cultural center, angering some preservationists. Khlebny Dom is the first part of the project to be finished, while work on the main palace continues. Photograph by Vladimir Filonov.
