Although the UN designated Oct. 1 as the International Day of Older Persons back in 1991, the holiday has never made much of a splash in Moscow. Saturday could be different, though, since the city government has planned a number of high-profile events to mark the day, such as a celebrity concert honoring some 600 couples on their 50th wedding anniversaries. The reason for the ramped-up celebrations this year is the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II and the desire to honor war veterans -- such as these pictured at a gathering last May.
