Crimeans Exempted From Reporting Ukrainian Citizenship

The Crimean branch of Russia's Federal Migration Service has decided not to force local citizens to report their Ukrainian citizenship, if they were citizens of Ukraine before Russia annexed the peninsula last year, the Kommersant newspaper reported Friday.

Residents of Crimea who received Ukrainian citizenship, or that of any other nation, since the Black Sea peninsula was integrated into the Russian Federation in March 2014 are not exempt from the ruling, and must adhere to Russian laws requiring dual citizenship to be reported.

The law was passed last year, and violation of the law can be punished by a fine or criminal prosecution. The law will go into effect in Crimea next year, Kommersant reported.
