MINSK, Belarus ?€” Gay and lesbian activists opened a festival of concerts, fashion shows and seminars Thursday in Minsk, but organizers said they were banned from holding a parade.
The Lambda Gay and Lesbian League had applied for permission to march Sunday in Minsk, but was refused.
"The unintelligent women sitting in the Minsk city administration do not want our city to be more beautiful and joyful for just a few hours," Edvard Tarletsky, chairman of the Lambda League, said at a news conference Thursday.
Tarletsky said opponents had threatened to disrupt the Belarus 2000 Gay Pride festival and said organizers had hired armed guards to prevent unrest.
