Festival of Student Productions 'Your Chance' Hits Moscow

The Theater Center Na Strastnom, where the Your Chance festival will be held, through May 30, for the fifth time in its history. John Freedman
For the fifth time in as many years, the Theater Center Na Strastnom will host one of Moscow’s most unusual and fastest growing theater events: the Your Chance festival of student productions.

The first edition in 2005 was devoted strictly to productions created locally. This year, the offerings include productions from institutes, universities and educational programs from seven foreign countries, including Brazil, Germany, Latvia and Italy. In addition to troupes from Moscow and St. Petersburg, there will be productions from four other Russian cities: Yekaterinburg, Saratov, Novosibirsk and Vladimir. Performances run daily from Sunday to May 30.

For the opening ceremony on Sunday at 6 p.m., the space around the Theater Center will be transformed into a street theater scene featuring jugglers, fencers and stunt performers. A performance of “Kinomania. Band,” a musical work concocted by students at the Shchukin Institute, follows at 7 p.m.

Several entries are of particular note. Oleg Getse, nominated for a best actor award at the recent Golden Mask Festival, will show his production of Mikhail Bulgakov’s “Zoya’s Apartment” for the Yekaterinburg Theater Institute on May 15 at 8 p.m.

A new version of Alexander Griboyedov’s “Woe From Wit” by Konstantin Raikin’s acting course at the Moscow Art Theater School was created specially for this festival. It plays May 12 at 9 p.m.

One of the final performances promises to be one of the most interesting. Lev Erenburg, the St. Petersburg director who has recently built up a strong international reputation with highly physical and energetic productions in St. Petersburg and Magnitogorsk, will put on display a piece he created with students in Prague. Alexander Ostrovsky’s “The Ward,” a production of POPOJEDEM and the Higher Special Actors School of Prague, plays May 29 at 7 p.m.

All performances take place at the Theater Center, located at 8a Strastnoi Bulvar. Tel. 694-4681, 363-1048.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
