Moscow Police Catch Suspect Who Underwent Plastic Surgery to Avoid Arrest

Alexander Avilov / Moskva News Agency

Moscow police have detained a man who got plastic surgery to change his appearance as a way to avoid arrest for allegedly stealing 20 million rubles ($309,800) through a debt collection scam.

The suspect and his wife would steal money from companies by submitting fake documents to arbitration courts to collect debts for services they did not actually provide, the state-run RIA Novosti news agency quoted Interior Ministry representative Irina Volk as saying.

The man, 56, underwent plastic surgery to evade detection from law enforcement, Volk said.

Police conducted 10 raids across Moscow region and Nizhny Novgorod region, seizing falsified documents, mobile phones, personal computers and SIM cards connected to the crimes.

The man was taken into custody and the 29-year-old woman was placed under house arrest, RIA reported. Authorities have opened a criminal case in connection with the crimes.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
