A woman in northern Russia faces charges of human trafficking for allegedly trying to sell her 5-month-old baby on the Internet, investigators said.
Police in the Sakha republic, also known as Yakutia, detained the 27-year-old woman as she tried to hand over the child to would-be buyers in exchange for 1.5 million rubles ($26,700), the regional branch of the Interior Ministry said in a statement Sunday.
The investigation began when local police were alerted to an ad placed on social networks offering the child for sale, the statement said.
The woman was trying to solve her “financial troubles” by offering to give up the baby to a “well-off family,” the regional Investigative Committee branch said in a statement.
The woman faces human trafficking charges, the Investigative Committee said. There was no mention of any charges against the alleged buyers.
