Russian Universities Rise Up Ranking by Subjects

Top Russian universities have improved their rankings in a subject-specific list of the best universities in the world, British-based education specialists QS said Wednesday.

Moscow State University (MSU) was listed among the top universities in the world for some subjects, including linguistics (joint 35th place), physics and astronomy (36th place) and mathematics (joint 42nd place), according to QS' latest ranking. QS ranks MSU as the 114th best university in the world.

Russia has struggled to boost its place in rankings of higher education institutions in recent years despite a pledge by the Kremlin to raise Russia's standing on the international education stage.

Three other Russian universities had subjects that were ranked in the top-100 best taught in the world and a total of 10 Russian universities made the ranking compared to two in the last year, according to QS.
