Culture Ministry Programs to Increase Museum Attendance Succeeded

More than 500,000 people visited Moscow museums during the "Night of Arts" program that offered free admission before midnight for two months at the end of last year, the Culture Ministry said.

Another program to promote museum-going, the "Intermusey" festival, saw the number of visitors increase six-fold from the previous year, reaching 30,000 people from 5,000 people in 2012, the ministry said in a report published on the government website Wednesday.

The festival offered tours of major art galleries around the country, as well as of government agencies' exhibition halls that are generally closed to the public.

The "Night of Arts" program, which opened on Nov. 3, included the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the Tretyakov Gallery, the Darwin Museum of Natural History, and other galleries and concert halls in the capital, according to the program's website.

The program may be expanded to other Russian cities in 2014, Vechernyaya Moskva reported last fall.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
