The Soviet Union's first test of an atomic bomb.

Sixty-four years ago today, on Aug. 29, 1949, the Soviet Union tested its first nuclear bomb at the Semipalatinsk Test Site in Kazakhstan. The bomb, which was packed with 45 tons of uranium, was a copy of the one deployed by the United States at Nagasaki.
