Arsonists Target Church Attended by 'Gay Propaganda' Law Co-Author

The St. Petersburg City Hall deputy who co-authored the law banning "homosexual propaganda" said unidentified assailants attempted to set fire to the church where he heads the board of trustees.

"Last night some degenerates tried to set the St. Peter's church on fire. Police have begun searching for the criminals," Vitaly Milonov wrote in his Twitter blog on Sunday.

He said that it was an arson attempt and that "Molotov cocktail were found" near the church.

At around 4 a.m. an unknown person tried to break a window pane and throw a bottle with flammable liquid into the church, but he could not break the glass before the alarm went off, alerting the police, Fontanka.ru reported.

The wooden church of St. Peter is located in St. Petersburg on Prospekt Stachek. The lawmaker not only heads the church's trustee board, but regularly participates in religious services.

There has been no indication that the arson attempt had anything to do with Milonov's participation in the church's affairs.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
