Weather records have been broken two days in a row as the air temperature in Moscow reached nearly 30 degrees Celsius, forecasters said Wednesday.
Wednesday's temperature rose to 28.8 C, which is 0.9 C higher than the previous record for May 15 set in 1946, Interfax reported, citing the federal weather service.
A record high of 29.7 C was set on Tuesday, and forecasters think the bar will be raised again Thursday, with temperatures expected to be between 29 and 31 C.
The weather bureau said that temperatures have been abnormally high for May, and has also issued a severe weather warning."The temperature for May has been 4 C higher than normal, but in the last few days that figure has reached 9 C," the weather bureau said in a statement carried by Interfax.
Forecasters warned of intermittent heavy showers and even thunderstorms in parts of the Moscow region in the coming days.
Temperatures are expected to dip Friday and Saturday.
A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."
These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.
We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.
Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.
By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
