Krymsk Officials Detained Over Flood Deaths

Emergency workers clearing up in the Krymsk district after flash flooding swept through the Krasnodar region.

Police detained three officials in the Krasnodar region over the weekend, accusing them of negligence after flooding killed 171 people in early July.

Krymsk Mayor Vladimir Ulanovsky, former head of the Krymsk district Vasily Krutko and Viktor Zhdanov, acting head of the district's emergency warning department, face up to seven years in prison and a ban on holding official positions for three years if tried and convicted of the charges, investigators said in a statement Sunday.

Authorities fired Krutko as district head a few days after torrential rain caused the worst flash flooding to hit the region in 70 years. An estimated 153 people died in Krymsk and the surrounding district alone.

Voters elected Ulanovsky as Krymsk mayor on May 13, when he garnered almost 95 percent of the vote as the United Russia candidate.

A Message from The Moscow Times:

Dear readers,

We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent."

These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia.

We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced. But to continue our work, we need your help.

Your support, no matter how small, makes a world of difference. If you can, please support us monthly starting from just $2. It's quick to set up, and every contribution makes a significant impact.

By supporting The Moscow Times, you're defending open, independent journalism in the face of repression. Thank you for standing with us.
