BERLIN — Germany is hosting government leaders and officials from the countries around the Baltic Sea to discuss energy security and ways to foster competitiveness and growth across the region.
Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed her counterparts from nine countries, a deputy prime minister from Russia and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Thursday in the eastern port city of Stralsund.
The Council of the Baltic Sea States includes Russia, Germany, Poland, the three Baltic countries and the five Nordic nations — including Iceland and Norway, which do not have a Baltic Sea coast.
