"We have said to the Angolan government that we want a commitment they are going to stop the fighting, and they have agreed to that, so there should be a de facto ceasefire," the official, who asked not to be named, said.
Formal signing of the pact was due to take place next Tuesday, to be followed two days later by a ceasefire. But the government assault on the rebel stronghold of Huambo, begun just before the initialing, led UNITA to threaten to ditch the peace agreement.
A UNITA spokesman could not confirm the report.
