The violence erupted in the East Timor capital of Dili, where Indonesian troops killed dozens of pro-independence protesters in November 1991 in an attack that drew sharp protests from the West. Indonesia annexed the Portuguese colony in 1976 after intervening in a civil war there.
"Three students were killed on the spot" and at least 30 were injured when riot police dispersed the protest by about 500 students, said Da Costa Bello, an activist of the private, local Etadet Foundation.
The activist said more than 60 people were arrested.
