Nebraska, which defeated previously unbeaten Colorado 24-7 Saturday, was No. 1 in The Associated Press media poll. Penn State, which trounced Ohio State 63-14, was No. 1 in the USA Today-CNN coaches' poll.
"We definitely feel we're No. 1," Penn State cornerback Brian Miller said. "I've never been on a team like this before. It's unbelievable."
Nebraska linebacker Troy Dumas was just as adamant.
"We're No. 1, plain and simple," he said. "Everyone who downgrades us can't do that anymore."
Nebraska, third in the AP poll last week behind No. 1 Penn State and No. 2 Colorado, rose to first after ending the Buffaloes' 11-game winning streak. But Penn State held on to the top spot in the coaches' poll after handing Ohio State its worst loss in 48 years.
In games Saturday:
No. 1 Penn State 63, No. 21 Ohio State 14. At State College, Penn State gave Ohio State its worst loss since a 58-6 defeat to Michigan in 1946.
Ki-Jana Carter, who grew up 10 minutes from the Ohio State campus, ran for four touchdowns and left in the third quarter with the score 49-7. Kerry Collins, the nation's top-rated passer, completed 19 of 23 for 265 yards and two touchdowns for Penn State (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten).
No. 3 Nebraska 24, No. 2 Colorado 7. At Lincoln, the Cornhuskers shut out Colorado, which had been averaging 40 points per game, until late in the third quarter.
Nebraska (9-0, 4-0 Big Eight) stayed on the inside track for the Orange Bowl and ended a 12-game losing streak to Top 5 teams since 1987. Colorado (7-1, 3-1) had beaten five ranked teams this season.
No. 4 Auburn 31, Arkansas 14. At Auburn, Stephen Davis ran for a career-high 246 yards and scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the Tigers won their 19th straight game. Auburn (8-0, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) was behind 14-10 entering the fourth quarter before Davis scored on runs of 1, 24 and 53 yards.
No. 5 Florida 52, Georgia 14. At Jacksonville, Florida, Darren Hambrick made a dazzling, 81-yard interception return for a touchdown on the final play of the first half, highlighting the victory for Florida (6-1, 5-1 SEC). The Gators' defense scored three times -- twice on interceptions and once on a fumble return.
No. 6 Miami 24, No. 13 Virginia Tech 3. At Miami, middle linebacker Ray Lewis made 17 tackles, intercepted a pass and broke up four others as the Hurricanes shut down Virginia Tech.
Miami (6-1, 3-0 Big East) forced three turnovers, had six sacks and held the Hokies to minus-14 yards rushing.
No. 7 Texas A&M 21, Southern Methodist 21. At San Antonio, Texas A&M lost its perfect season when Kyle Bryant's 67-yard field goal attempt fell short with one second left.
The Aggies (7-0-1, 4-0-1) had won 26 in a row in the Southwest Conference.
