TORONTO -- Detroit Red Wings center Sergei Fedorov on Thursday became the first Russian ever to win the Hart Trophy as the National Hockey League's Most Valuable Player. Fedorov was the big winner at the NHL's annual awards banquet, walking away with not only the grand prize -- the Hart Memorial Trophy -- but also the Frank Selke Award as the league's top defensive forward for the 1993-94 season. Earlier Thursday it was announced that Fedorov had also won the Lester B. Pearson Award as most outstanding player as selected by his peers. The three awards and All-Star selection netted the Russian star a $100,000 bonus for each. The first Red Wing to win the Hart since the legendary Gordie Howe in 1963, Fedorov was also named by the NHL to its All-Star Team. Joining Fedorov on the first squad was another Russian, Vancouver right wing Pavel Bure.
