Youths Riot in Lagos

LAGOS -- Police fired into the air in Lagos on Tuesday to disperse rioting youths demanding an end to military rule in Nigeria, witnesses said.

"People were protesting against the government and the police fired many bullets into the air and everyone just ran for their lives," said Moji Akande, a witness at the scene of the riot.

Nigerian oil workers on strike for the fourth week over the detention of Moshood Abiola, the undeclared winner of last year's annulled presidential vote, pressed ahead with their action, while other workers threatened to join the strikers. A six-hour session between strikers and government negotiators Monday failed to get oil unions to call off their work stoppage which has brought Nigeria to a halt.
