Yeltsin to Visit Berlin

BONN ()-- President Boris Yeltsin will travel to Berlin on Aug. 31 to attend departure ceremonies for the last Russian soldiers stationed on German soil, a Bonn government spokesman said Wednesday.

Yeltsin will be welcomed by Chancellor Helmut Kohl and wreaths will be laid at various sites throughout the city during the day, spokesman Norbert Sch?fer said.

Yeltsin also plans to hold a reception in the former Soviet Embassy in east Berlin after a lunch hosted by German President Roman Herzog.

Only some 3,200 of a one-time Soviet force of 380,000 troops remain in former East Germany. Moscow pledged to withdraw all its soldiers by the end of 1994 as part of international agreements on German unity in October 1990.
