Yeltsin Orders Probe

MOSCOW () -- President Boris Yeltsin on Wednesday asked acting Public Prosecutor Aleksei Ilyushenko and Interior Minister Viktor Yerin to investigate the raid by the presidential guard Friday on the office of MOST-Bank.

Interfax quoted Vyacheslav Kostikov, Yeltsin's press secretary, as saying that the president "shares the critical anxiety of the public" and ordered the probe to be carried out quickly.

About 30 of Yeltsin's personal guards, clad in balaclavas, flak jackets and armed with automatic assault rifles, sealed off the building in central Moscow that houses MOST-Bank and the mayor's office, and severely beat several bank guards.
