Yakubovsky Held Over Theft

St. Petersburg prosecutor's office confirmed Friday that the lawyer Dmitry Yakubovsky had been detained by the city police and accused of involvement in the theft of a collection of ancient books, Itar-Tass reported.

A collection of ancient books and manuscripts, worth an estimated $100 million to $250 million, was stolen Dec. 10 from the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg. The manuscripts range from 300 to 1,300 years old.

Yakubovsky was detained Tuesday in Moscow by St. Petersburg police and transported to the city. Counterintelligence found the collection a week after the theft and detained three suspects. The agency said St. Petersburg police planned to make more arrests.

The agency said Yakubovsky had been accused of theft of items with "special value" and faced imprisonment for 5 to 15 years if convicted.

Yakubovsky, 31, was appointed last year by the president to investigate corruption in the upper echelons of power.
