Waco Survivors Jailed

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Eight Branch Davidians were sentenced Friday to prison terms ranging from five to 40 years for their roles in a deadly shootout with federal authorities in Texas last year. U.S. District Judge Walter Smith sentenced five defendants to the maximum 40-year prison term. "These defendants engaged in conspiracy to cause the death of federal agents," Smith said. Four Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents died in the initial raid last year of the cult's compound near Waco, as did six Branch Davidians. The raid led to a 51-day standoff, which ended April 19, 1993 when a fire destroyed the compound. Cult leader David Koresh and 80 followers died.
