Vietnamese Slam French

HANOI, Vietnam ( -- Vietnamese state-sponsored writers attacked France in interviews published Wednesday for giving a state decoration to a prominent Vietnamese dissident author.

French Culture Minister Jacques Toubon gave the Order of Arts and Letters this month to novelist Duong Thu Huong for her human-rights advocacy.

Huong spent seven months in jail in 1991 after being accused of, but not formally charged with, sending documents damaging to Vietnam's national security out of the country. Some of her books are banned in Vietnam.

Strong criticism of the French award came in interviews in the Communist Party and army newspapers.
