U.S. Shrugs Off Military Parade

Reuters
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Defense Department said it was unconcerned by Russia's plans to parade military hardware on Red Square in a show of strength reminiscent of Soviet times.

"If they wish to take out their old equipment and take it for a spin, and check it out, they're more than welcome to do so," Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell told reporters on Tuesday.

The Kremlin ordered generals to revive the Soviet-era tradition of driving tanks, howitzers and missile launchers during the annual parade Friday, which commemorates the allied defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945.

The parade has not featured heavy weaponry since 1990, the year before the Soviet Union's collapse.
