U.S. Carriers Declare Air-Fare War

NEW YORK -- American Airlines and United Airlines, North America's largest carriers, are offering discounts of up to 50 percent on all domestic flights booked by April 14.

The promotion by the airlines comes after Northwest announced a summer fare sale in some U.S. markets.

USAir, Trans World Airline, Delta, America West and Continental said Friday they would match Northwest's fares in competitive markets.

"The airlines are trying to get their planes filled up and sales are the way to do that," said Edmund Greenslet, an aviation analyst with EG Aviation Services in Jacksonville, Florida.

Northwest was first to announce the discounted fares. Passengers are required to fly Tuesday, Wednesday or on Saturday afternoons between May 1 and Sept. 14 to get the full 50 percent discount in cities where the discounts apply. Northwest's discount tickets must be booked by April 7.
