Uranium Seized

BUCHAREST () -- Romanian authorities said Wednesday they had seized seven kilograms of uranium and a quantity of strontium smuggled from Ukraine, and had arrested two Jordanians.


Police and Interior Ministry spokesmen confirmed local newspaper reports the radioactive material had been seized in the Romanian province of Moldova on Monday -- the second interception of uranium smugglers in two weeks.


Seven people, including the two Jordanians who planned to take the material out of the country, had been arrested. Among those detained were a former Red Army officer from Ukraine accused of smuggling the uranium.


Last week Romanian authorities said 4.5 kilograms of uranium had been seized near Bucharest.
