United Thrashes City, 5-0

LONDON -- Ukrainian international Andrei Kanchelskis scored a superb individual hat trick as part of a stunning team performance that gave Manchester United a 5-0 win over Manchester City in a one-sidedPremier League derby.

Kanchelskis scored on either side of half-time and again two minutes from the end of a match Thursday in which the champions moved up to second in the table, two points behind leaders Newcastle United.

Frenchman Eric Cantona started the rout after 24 minutes when he spun a curling ball past Simon Tracey in the City goal. Mark Hughes was United's other scorer, firing home in the fourth at 70 minutes.

Besides Kanchelskis, United's domination was built on solid work from England international Paul Ince, who was named the man of the match by sponsors.

The victory was United's biggest-ever over their rivals in 121 derbies, which started exactly 100 years ago this month.

Ron Atkinson was fired as manager of Aston Villa, the third Premier League boss to lose his job in the past 10 days.

The firing came less than 24 hours after the club's 4-3 loss to Wimbledon, Villa's eighth defeat in its last nine league games. Tottenham's Ossie Ardiles was fired last week, and Mike Walker was ousted at Everton on Tuesday. Oldham's Joe Royle was named to succeed Walker at the struggling Premier League club.
