unions face riot police

BUCHAREST -- Romania's government was in a tense standoff with trade unions Thursday after deploying riot police to threaten thousands of workers who staged a sit-in protest on the prime minister's doorstep. The planned week-long protest, pressing for 50 percent pay hikes, retirement rights and job protection, went peacefully into its third day but tension was rising after the riot police moved in and overnight negotiations with the government failed. Hundreds of riot police surrounded Victory Square before dawn and asked about 1,000 protesters to leave. Police cars and motorcycles with flashing lights patrolled the area.
