UN to Stay in Abkhazia

UNITED NATIONS () -- Little progress has been made toward a political settlement in Abkhazia and few refugees have returned to their homes in the breakaway region of Georgia, according to the UN chief.

UN Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali recommended Monday keeping 136 UN military observers in the former Soviet republic for at least four more months. Their mandate expires Friday.

An estimated 250,000 people fled the region, most of them ethnic Georgians, and so far a "very disappointing" number have returned, Boutros-Ghali said in a report to the Security Council.
